Water's Edge

Water's Edge Buffet, Atlantis Resort, BahamasWater’s Edge buffet is your best bet when it comes to choosing breakfast at Atlantis.  Found on the ground floor of the Coral Towers, Water’s Edge offers a wide selection of breakfast choices each morning.

The experience begins a little backwards from what most Americans are accustomed to; instead of paying for the meal after the goods have been eaten, you will be expected to pay a per-person buffet fee as well as an automatic 15% gratuity fee before being seated.

Breakfast is typically $26.45 for adults ages 12 and over, including the gratuity fee.  You may use your room card to add the charge to your account.   After being shown to your table, you can feel free to eat your heart out at the many buffet stations.

Start the day out right with your choice of orange, apple, grapefruit, iced tea, pineapple, tomato,  fruit punch, milk, chocolate milk, or even guava juice, my particular island favorite.  Coffee and water are offered separately by your table host or hostess.

You’ll find typical breakfast staples on the same station as the juices; pick from a reasonable selection of boxed cereals, Yoplait yogurt, freshly cut grapefruit and oranges, grapes, strawberries, cantaloupe, musk melon, fruit salad, and canned pears and peaches for a light breakfast.  Whole fruits such as bananas, apples, and oranges are also available.

If you’re looking for a little  substance for your day, segue to the hot dish station, where you’ll find waffles, pancakes, and French toast, complete with your choice of pineapple sauce, strawberry filling, cooked cherry sauce, powdered sugar, coconut flakes, and maple syrup.

Scrambled eggs, poached eggs on biscuits, corned beef hash, bacon, sausage, and potato squares grace the plates for a well-rounded breakfast.  Then, each morning, a different dish will serve as the special.  One such dish is Bahamian grouper in a zesty Caribbean sauce.  Although potent, this will put smiles on the faces of anyone who wanted to try a true Bahamian fish meal.

Another favorite is a Bahamian staple, chicken with potato dumplings.  Drenched in a clear sauce, this one’s more flavorful and spicy than it leads on.  Take these in small amounts, along with the morning’s choice of meat, which usually consist of a gourmet ham or a choice roast.

Finish off your perfect breakfast with a trip to the dessert bar, complete with fresh chocolate-frosted donuts,  multi-flavored muffins, cornbread, apple turnovers, and miniature cinnamon rolls.

Water’s Edge Buffet is equally diverse in their dinnertime selections; however, you will pay literally twice as much as the breakfast cost.  In other words, you’re looking at $52.90 per adult meal, thus making Water’s Edge not quite the most economical dinner choice at Atlantis.

But if price is no object, you’re sure to get your money’s worth at the dinner buffet.  Part of your dinner payment goes towards lobster tails, which are limited to one per guest -  no seconds unless another member of your party surrenders his or her lobster ticket to you for redemption.  But with the tempting,  juicy lobster offered at Water’s Edge, there’s little chance of that!

Compliment your lobster with choice Bahamian fish of the sea, including fresh shrimp and succulent sushi.  Served with cocktail sauces and Bahamian salsas, these dishes aim to please even the most finicky eaters.

But if fish really aren’t your catch of choice, Water’s Edge offers a modest selection of non-gilled alternatives: steak filets, freshly sliced roast, and ham selections are available for the taking.

Whichever main meat you choose, Water’s Edge serves up plenty of mouth-watering side dishes to match.  Whether you’re into  spicy bow-tie pasta casserole or a Southern-style cheesy potato bake, these are more than just meal fillers – they’re a course in their own right.

Of course, no meal at Water’s Edge is complete without a little fruit, which is plenteous at the fruit bar.  Selections are pretty much the same as those for breakfast, minus such items as the whole fruits and sliced grapefruit.

Although Water’s Edge doesn’t pull out all the stops for dessert, you’ll still find something to satisfy your sweet tooth at the dessert table.  Moist chocolate brownies with a nutty twist, blueberry cheesecake that’s a little heavy on the cream cheese, or layer cakes in strawberry, vanilla, or chocolate will find you making a second trip to this delectable spread.  There’s even a soft-serve ice cream station, where you are welcome to serve yourself as much ice cream as your heart desires, complete with fun toppings.

All this and more make your experience at Water’s Edge one you’ll want to start all over again!
