ATLANTIS RESORT
WATERSLIDES
If you’re planning a trip to the
Atlantis Resort in the Bahamas, you’re likely pretty
excited about their waterslides.
The Atlantis Resort gave their little waterslide
paradise a name – Aquaventure – and that’s what the rides
are all about, adventures in the water.
Serpent Slide
This devious slide is pitch black throughout and
takes you and your tube winding this way and that through
five stories of the Mayan Temple. It, too, dumps you out
in the shark tank, only this time you’ll get a better
look as your tube floats through the tubular
pool.
Challenger Slides
If you’ve ever been to Treasure Island
Waterpark in Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin, you’ve likely seen
the big, wavy slide next to the Demon Drop. These slides are very
similar, only there’s two. This way, you and a
partner can race down the slides and check your time on the
display counter at the bottom.

Leap of
Faith
Atlantis is renowned for its signature
slide, the Leap of Faith (pictured left), found in the
Mayan Temple.
Unfortunately, the entire Mayan Temple was closed for
repairs during our trip, which was a real bummer, so we
didn’t get to ride any Mayan Temple slides. However, we did get a
pretty good view of most of the slides without even having
to ride them.
Leap of Faith is just your average drop slide,
except it has a shocking little twist at the
bottom. You
literally slide right through a shark tank. The slide descends into
a transparent acrylic tube lodged inside a shark tank,
giving you the allusion that you’re swimming with the
sharks.
However, there might be a little too much water spraying
in your face by the time you reach the bottom that you
won’t notice how many huge teeth are swimming by above
you.
Jungle Slide
The Jungle Slide is not your average Bahamian
body slide.
In fact, you’ll forget you’re in the Bahamas at
all. This
slide takes you on a high-speed race down to the middle
of the Mayan Temple through forests of jungle
flora. But
don’t worry about snakes and spiders; the ride is over
before you know it.
The Power Tower is the other extreme
slide hub at Atlantis’ Aquaventure. These slides were open, so
we tried out all of them, naturally. Some of them are great
fun, too, so long as you don’t mind a little
jolting.
The
Surge
The Surge slide is by far one of the
most thrilling ever. Located atop the Power
Tower under a crypt-like coffin, you know what you’re
getting yourself into before you slide to your
doom. The Surge
is definitely breath-taking, so it’s not a slide for the
faint of heart.
As soon as you position yourself at the top, you’re plunging
at a complete ninety-degree vertical angle straight to the
bottom, where torrents of water flush you out into a dark
pool surrounded by an aquarium cave. There are lifeguards at
the bottom just to make sure you made it out
alive. But
remember to leave any valuables behind; when we were there,
a man lost his credit cards as they flew out of his swim
trunks one by one in a row behind him on the
slide!

The Abyss
The Abyss is the most thrilling tube slide in
Atlantis; from the near-vertical 50-foot drop to
individual surges and bumps along the way, you’re in for
an amazingly mysterious ride. However, you might only
want to stand in line for this one once or twice, and get
there as early as possible – it’s one of the longest and
slowest-moving.
The Falls and the Drop
These two slides are very much the same, with
the exception of a few different bumps. You can ride these in a
single or double tube, and you get to each of them in the
same fashion – by way of the Lazy River or the conveyor
belt – also located in a section of the Lazy
River.
They’re not all that much fun, considering the time you
spend on the Lazy River just getting to them. But they’re definitely
a must-ride; at least just once!
All the slides in Atlantis are amazing, but some
you’ll want to ride more than others. Make sure you also wear
plenty of sunscreen if you plan on riding the slides
along the Lazy River – we baked like crab cakes while
sitting in line on tubes to get up the conveyor belt to
reach the Falls and the Drop!
