Internet
Access in Atlantis Resort Hotel Rooms
Taking a trip to Atlantis Resort on Paradise
Island in the beautiful Bahamas? If you can leave your
laptop and all electronic toys behind and just enjoy the
beach, then good for you. But if you want internet access
while staying at Atlantis and check their website or call
the resort, you may be disappointed.
Atlantis’ website and phone representatives will
tell you that there is no in-room internet access at
Atlantis, but that wireless internet is available in
certain lobbies and other common areas for $10 per
day.
Why this misinformation I don’t know. As of
April 1st, 2008, internet access was available in the
rooms in both Beach Towers and Coral Towers, and these
aren’t the newly renovated areas.
If your room is close enough to a common area,
you may well connect to the wireless provided in the
common areas. But wired access is available, in fact you
may even find a Cat 5e cable in the drawer in the
room.
The trick is knowing what to look for. There is
a black box behind the entertainment center with many
cables protruding. There are two Ethernet jacks on the
back of this box. The one in the center of the back is
likely for data in. The other is conveniently labeled
“laptop”. Plug right in to that if you like and you will
get the same $10 per day internet access right in your
room.
You may find that jack already has a cable
plugged into it. If that is the case, it probably runs to
a convenience jack located by the table next to the
entertainment center which should then have an open
Ethernet jack that you can plug into.
If you really want the best of all worlds, take
a LinkSys travel router with you and plug it into the
wall power jack. It can then either relay the wireless
signal (if you are close enough) or you can plug it into
the Ethernet jack against the wall or the laptop
connection on the black box.
With the LinkSys travel router connected either
wirelessly or via cable you have the additional
protection of a hardware router protecting your computer
and optionally have the wireless access to roam about
your room and balcony. The router also gives you the
option of connecting more than one PC; however you may
have to pay the $10 for each PC.
The bottom line is that there definitely is
in-room internet access at Atlantis Resort on Paradise
Island in the Bahamas; at least in the older Beach and
Coral towers.
